What is the Beneficial Difference between Lime Mortar and Portland Cement?

In typical ancient construction, the lime mortar was fundamental building material such as timber, bricks, steels, sands, and stones. Lime mortar used for making binding material, plastering, pointing, masonry jointing, cement slurry, brick lying, external render, internal plaster, limewash, solid floors, and finishing works.

Lime mortar made from ancient traditional lime putty that contained rich in limestone, egg, jaggery, gallnut, etc. that set slowly bit by bit but result in too strong. Lime mortar reflects heat and reduces heat by 6 to 8% inside the building but Portland cement absorbs heat, retains heat, and emits heat in the building as in the environment.


Lime mortar keeps the heat constant inside the building even atmosphere too cold, but Portland cement reflects the atmosphere heat/cold respectively inside the building.


Lime mortar price depends on the quantity of lime mortar to be consumed. If you buy less quantity of lime mortar the price is higher than Portland cement but if you buy more quantity of the lime mortar the price is lesser than Portland cement.


Lime mortar buildings need not be painted but Portland cement buildings are painted after construction and also periodically.


Lime mortar-based buildings enlarge, constrict, and flexible according to temperature and moisture. The use of lime mortar also permits damp to be assimilated to a finite degree and then evaporate harmlessly away. Our ancestors acknowledged that rain and rising damp were bound to discover a way into the walls of their buildings, so they built their home’s walls dense, and the soft, porous lime mortars and provides acted as a wick to draw the moisture away once again, but Portland cement does not have such a future.


Lime mortar has higher embodied energy than Portland cement.


It is possible to produce lime mortar on a small scale but Portland cement is not possible to produce a small scale.


One of the greatest advantages of lime mortar is its recyclability. Lime mortar can easily be separated from brickwork, the gentle adhesive properties of lime mortar make possible full re-use of other materials, but it is not possible in Portland cement.
